released their first album, ‘invisible world’, in May this year. This band is the brainchild of Tom Unwin, who writes and arranges the music, a playful mixture of lyrical, thoughtful and groovy tunes, both originals and standards, played with freedom and verve.
Infused with the styles of Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders, Miles Davis and Joni Mitchell (to name a few), but also influenced by cinema, photography and poetry, The Blow-Up is a collage - an evocation of the 1960s musical and political explosions, when jazz musicians started to use wider grooves to move things forward. This is a process continued by The Blow-Up using elements from soundtrack music, dance music and minimalism, and drawing on the rich traditions of European jazz as exemplified by ECM Records and E.S.T.
Members of the band have played with ONL, Pee Wee Ellis, Bryan Spring, Mark Nightingale, Ed Jones, John Etheridge, Dave Newton and the RSO with Thomas Dolby.
