comprises the best of Devon's young jazz musicians and is split into two separate bands.
DYJO2, under the direction of Brian Moore, is the younger of the two bands, and is focused on the essentials of big band playing: ensemble skills in swing, and the fundamentals of jazz soloing.
DYJO1, with Graham Hutton, is the senior band, and aims to stretch the players' skills in all directions in a wide range of repertoire.
The bands perform at numerous venues every year throughout Devon, but are always delighted to return to the Teignmouth Jazz Festival. This year DYJO have been invited to play in the outdoor arena at the Montreux Jazz Festival in July. DYJO has also received national accolades for the way its members learn and the outreach work the players have done in Devon schools in promoting the learning of jazz for primary school children.
Gordon Campbell's career took him from being principal trombone in the Scottish Radio Orchestra to filling the same chair in the BBC Big Band where he has been for the last 26 years. Apart from being the most respected lead trombonist in Europe, Gordon is also recognised as one of the best soloists around and he is also currently Professor of Trombone at the Royal Marines School of Music.
