Roger Beaujolais concept of the quintet is to play mainly original, acoustic jazz in a classic modern jazz setting. Taking as a starting point the small bands of the fifties and taking influences from both the hard bop and cool schools of the same time the quintet is both hard hitting at times and gentle at others. Some tunes are complex while others are more simple - this is a deliberate plan to highlight the contrasts between the two styles and to show the breadth of playing that all the musicians are capable of.

The quintet has benefitted from a stable line-up and the new original tunes were created to play to the strengths of the musicians in the band. The standards in the quintet repertoire are on the whole quite obscure including infrequently covered tunes by Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Grant Green, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Bobby Hutcherson to name a few. Joining Roger (vibraphone/composer) who is a Professor of Music at Trinity College of Music, London are; Mark Lockheart (tenor and soprano sax) is one of the most distinctive, diverse and creative musicians on the current British music scene. Winston Clifford (drums) is one of the most popular drummers on the UK jazz scene who has played with virtually all of the top musicians in the country. Robin Aspland (piano) toured and recorded with Van Morrison for six years and played on many sessions for TV and film. Simon Thorpe (double bass), one of Britain's most popular bass players and is well known for his great sound, melodic solos and solid beat - a favourite with many of the greats in Britain and the USA.
