Dave O’Higgins Quartet Workshop

Dave O’Higgins is a saxophonist, composer, arranger, educator and latterly recording engineer and producer. He has been a popular figure on the UK and international jazz scene for 30 years now, with 19 albums as leader under his belt: Characteristically of him he is doing far more than just playing at this year’s Teignmouth Jazz and Blues Festival.  On Friday evening he is working alongside Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra while on Saturday morning (18th) he and his band are running a workshop for local musicians at Pavilions Teignmouth from 10.30am to 12Noon.
The workshop with Dave and his Band is suitable for all instrumentalists including drummers prepared to have a go at improvisation.  Reading is not essential and Dave will adapt material according to level and is happy to teach these tunes by ear on the session to those who don’t know them.
Programme
The band will play a short blues and a short Rhythm changes to introduce ourselves, then play the blues with everyone and workshop
1) a blues
2) “I Got Rhythm” chord progression
And then the  session moves on to the rhythm changes focusing on  sound, rhythm, articulation, phrasing, imitation, melody and harmony at a level appropriate to the majority.
The tunes are:-
“Sonnymoon For Two” in F
“Lester Leaps In” in Bb
Places are limited to 10 so booking (£15) in advance is recommended.
Dave is also encouraging non-participating people to come along for free on the day as they can gain value from listening and watching to what is being said and played.
