Teign Jazz & Blues – Registered Charity No. 1086155

A little bit about us and what we do……………………..

Founded in 1991, Teignmouth Jazz & Blues Club (formally known as ‘Teignmouth Jazz’)  runs club nights throughout the year.  Our club is run entirely by a committee of volunteers. For 30 years we ran an annual festival in November.

Our aim is to maintain and increase interest in jazz and blues music and to encourage all age groups to enjoy music, either through listening or playing.  We provide varied musical opportunities for the community and for musicians young and old.

Since the COVID pandemic, local government funding has been much tighter for all areas of expenditure. This has meant that no festival will run in 2022, the last one having been in 2019. We are working on a new business model for the festival, which was always artistically rich but relied on funding to be a viable proposition. Arts funding has tended to be concentrated in larger corporate venues with high costs, a trend exacerbated during 2020-21 by the massive loss of audiences for understandable reasons. Numerous small jazz clubs in England have had to close their doors in the past two years, and this issue has been highlighted in an open letter to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, with the All Party Parliamentary Group for Jazz also joining the debate. In the mean time, we run the charity in a prudent and business-like fashion, with minimal costs, and are lucky enough to be in a secure and improving financial position, for the time being. Members are welcome to attend our AGM, generally around the New Year, which is always published well in advance in our newsletter.

We are particularly keen to encourage and support young musicians and to this end we would always invite Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra to open our festival and we funded a top class musician to play with them.  In the past they have included saxophonist Dave O’Higgins, pianist Andrea Vicari and trumpeter Yaz Ahmed. We have renewed our link with DYJO this year with a workshop run by South Devon Youth Jazz at our venue in association with the Matt Carter Septet on 5th June 2022.
