Prior to 2020 we had put on several concerts in conjunction with Pavilions Teignmouth featuring female vocalists as well as other groups. Gabrielle Ducomble’s performance was postponed twice but did happen in 2021 to a reduced but sell-out audience, according to rules in place at the time.
Since August 2021, having had much success with regular gig nights at our new venue the Yacht Club, we wanted to build on this and bring back bigger touring acts to the grander stage that is the Pavilions. We were very pleased to rekindle the relationship in April 2022 by bringing over Irish singer and international renowned vocalist Christine Tobin, with Phil Robson on guitar and Dave Whitford on bass. Christine and Phil built a UK trip on the basis of the booking from Teign Jazz and Blues, prompting coverage on local radio, in the local press and in London Jazz News (with two of her gigs being in London). Having conquered the London and then the New York scenes, and with the latter scene severely damaged by COVID, the two artists moved to Ireland in 2020 to explore new artistic links, writing songs to the poetry of WB Yeats and getting several other commissions from the Irish Arts Council and other bodies to widespread critical acclaim. Both we and they were really pleased to bring their much loved, unique brand of music back to the UK and to South Devon in particular.
The Ladies sing venture continues in May 2022 with the Lourdes-Fernandez flamenco group – invited on the basis of our good relationship with their superb percussionist Demi Garcia, who has played to packed out audiences for us with Nicolas Meier and others. Our audience is clearly open-minded, keen to hear genres beyond traditional jazz and blues boundaries, as bookings for this group are doing very well. Once again we are proud to be booking cutting-edge music, leveraging what we hope is our reputation for good taste, and bringing a wide variety of musical styles to the area.
