The Jazz Defenders are a quintet formed by  pianist George Cooper (a local boy who has created an enviable reputation for himself in Europe and across the pond). With him are Nicholas Dover (sax), Nick Malcolm (trumpet), Will Harris (bass) and Matt Brown (drums). They came together in 2015 drawn by a mutual love and respect for soul-jazz and classic hard bop – the music of the Golden Age of Blue Note. With three albums behind them expect original tunes in the spirit of stars like Horace Silver, Grant Green, Donald Byrd, and Lou Donaldson.

With Jamie Cullum and Craig Charles both giving the band big plaudits, this is a band to suit many tastes across the jazz and soul spectrum. See if you agree on https://www.thejazzdefenders.com/

Matt Carter is a good friend of the club, having played for us over many years when growing up. Last year, after graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, he returned triumphantly for a memorable and sold out trio set, blowing our 2021 cobwebs away to open our current series of events at the Yacht Club. He is now a much in demand London based jazz and session musician, booked for tours with big name bands.

Matt’s unrivalled pianistic skills are matched by his arranging and composing which are on show in this all star band, formed during his first year at the Academy. In 2019 this band packed out the former Bronx bar (a rare feat in those days), and we fully expect the same this time as they pass us on their tour. They have previously performed at many of the country’s leading jazz venues, and this year will be going into the recording studio to record an album. The line-up features some of the country’s best young jazz musicians, playing a dynamic array of original compositions and arrangements of Great American Songbook standards.

Matt’s writing has been compared to Marty Paich, and he is heavily influenced by West coast jazz from the 50’s and 60’s. Expect swinging soli sections, and dynamic solos from this young and extremely talented line-up.

The band is also running a workshop from 4-6pm for young and aspiring musicians, in conjunction with Sam Massey, DYJO and the South Devon Youth Jazz project. Tickets for the workshop are available separately or with the evening entertainment (we recommend musicians and parents book both together so as not to miss out).

Line-up:
Piano – Matt Carter
Bass – Joe Lee
Drums – Luke Tomlinson
Trumpet – George Jefford
Tenor sax – Jonny Ford
Alto sax – Tom Smith
Trombone – Harry Maund

Tickets are available online here. In due course they will be available from Regent’s Style barbers, Teignmouth.

Christine Tobin’s Tower of Song

Friday 29th April 2022

Starts at 7.30pm

at the Teignmouth Pavilions.

Buy tickets online here

We have renewed our “Ladies Sing…” collaboration with Teignmouth’s premier venue, the Pavilions, having enjoyed success followed by a bit of a hiatus in 2020-21. The series showcases some of the best vocal talent from the UK and further afield.

Christine Tobin is an exceptional and multi-award winning international vocalist and composer. Born in Ireland, she rose to prominence on the London scene before emigrating again to New York and making it in the tough jazz scene there, a feat few from this side of the Atlantic accomplish. Since 2019 she has been based back in Roscommon, Ireland.

Her unique, rich sound was described by The Guardian as ‘Tobin’s 24 carat voice’. Her expressive range acknowledges finely acquired jazz, folk and twentieth century classical influences.

She can be junkyard blues philosopher, snappy beat seductress, a conduit for exquisite zen-like harmonies, or reflective Americana. Her ‘Tower of Song’ repertoire includes Tobin originals, new arrangements of Jazz classics, unique interpretations of Leonard Cohen and Carole King, and her settings of WB Yeats’s poetry – which won the Herald Angel Award at the 2014 Edinburgh festival.

Christine Tobin – vocals, Phil Robson – guitars, Dave Whitford – bass

Phil Robson: guitar

As well as being one of the leading jazz guitarists in Europe, Phil is also celebrated as an innovative composer. He is the leader of Six Strings and the Beat, Phil Robson Trio and co leader of Partisans. He also has a trio with U.S. drum legend Billy Hart and bassist James Genus and is a longtime member of the BBC Big Band who he has written and arranged for.

Dave Whitford: double bass

From Cornwall, this superb double bass player has become one of London’s most in demand musicians for U.K. and visiting international bands. He has played and recorded with Steve Lacy, Kenny Wheeler, Hans Koller Big Band, Marc Copland (U.K. rhythm section) Bobby Wellins and John Taylor. He is also a regular guest with the NDR Bigband in Hamburg.

Tickets are available online here, and in person from the Pavilions in Teignmouth.

We advise booking early as we tend to sell out 2 or more weeks in advance.

Originally from Glasgow but now based in Devon, Russell Sinclair is rapidly developing a name for himself as one of the most talented young Bluesmen in the South West, with a voice so soulful you could be mistaken for thinking you were listening to music in the Deep South. Combining the sounds of energetic Chicago Blues, Southern Soul, Swing and Roots, Russell plays both originals and covers with his band ‘The Southern Honey’, contrasting songs of intimacy with high energy driving numbers. Russell’s earnest and evocative blend of lyricism is a big part of his music, and his approach as a storyteller is emotional and highly relatable. After some memorable blues evenings, this is another night not to be missed!

Joanna Cooke and Nathan Austin

Thursday 24th March 2022

Doors from 6.30pm

We continue our run at Teignmouth’s yacht club, with its great acoustic, welcoming staff and great food and drink.

South-West songstress Joanna Cooke brings her soulful, self-penned songs to Teignmouth on Thursday March 24th. With Joanna on vocals and piano, and Nathan Austin on guitar & stomp box, expect an intimate evening of quality contemporary songs, peppered with classic tracks by some of the greats of Jazz, Soul & Blues.

Recognising a voice with the soul & power of someone way beyond her years Motown legend Martha Reeves put it perfectly, describing Joanna as “the baby girl singing the blues”. She grew up in an artistic family, where her father’s blues records by greats like Howling Wolf and Robert Johnson were the soundtrack. With a restless desire to play music, Joanna taught herself the piano from a keyboard she found in a skip, and wrote songs that brought her school teachers to tears.

Fast forward and this self-sufficiency, drive and talent now see her performing both with big name artists and at her own solo shows. These successes range from festival main stage appearances, supporting Paloma Faith and Rag’n’Bone Man, to shows with quality artists like Jo Harman, Beth Rowley and Martin Harley.

Following the critical success of her previous 3 EPs and a single releases came 2 more notable singles in 2021. “No Stranger To The Blues” and “Give It Up” were recorded with Redtenbacher’s Funkestra at the Masterlink sessions in Surrey. Both recordings were done entirely live in the studio, with no fixes – just Joanna and the musicians, whose credits include Elton John, David Bowie, Tom Jones & Van Morrison. (See video link below.)

There’s more new music coming in 2022. Finishing touches are being made to tracks Joanna has been working on with producer Mark Edwards (Carleen Anderson) in Sussex, with releases due in the New Year.

In addition to sharing her own distinctive vocals and keys, Joanna will be be joined at this show by long-standing musical partner Nathan Austin on guitar, backing vocals & stomp for a performance of her own quality material and interestingly treated covers.

“This is how it’s done…soulful & epic, Joanna Cooke is bursting with raw talent!” – BBC Introducing

Stevie Watts Organ Trio + Alice Armstrong

Thursday 21st April 2022

Stevie Watts – Organ

Nat Martin – Guitar

Vinnie Lammi – Drums

Alice Armstrong – Vocals

The Stevie Watts Organ Trio are all highly regarded session players having worked with names ranging from Secret Affair, Steve Winwood, Archive to The Spice Girls.

Stevie met Nat Martin when working together in singer Jo Harman’s band where they quickly bonded personally and musically. Stevie’s drummer friend Vinnie Lammi was recruited then on a Christmas gig Stevie met Alice who was then invited to write vocal parts to some tracks that Stevie had written and their debut album Mission to the Moon came together on a boat in Shoreham by Sea.

The fire and energy in the sound that these three make defies the fact that they’re a trio and when Alice joins them they turn into something that no other band (with organ bass) using this format sounds like. Take outstanding players with great songs that lift your spirit, make you dance as well as cry (in a good way!), include infectious funk and rip-roaring solos and you have something that you would be absolutely crazy to miss!

We would also like to point out that Stevie Watts is a finalist for the UK blues award of blues instrumentalist of the year, and Alice Armstrong is nominated for blues singer of the year.

Jon Amor’s King Street Turnaround

Thursday 17th February 2022

Doors from 6.30pm

Music from 7.30pm

at the Teign Corinthian Yacht  Club.

This event was sold out.
Jon Amor was one of the 2 lead guitarists from a very successful young Blues band called the Hoax in the late 90s. Based in Devizes, he’s gone on to lead several bands since, receiving acclaim for his style and musical ability. We feel this is quite a coup that he’s agreed to come down and play for us. According to his drummer “Jon just loves playing”.
In the band’s own words, “Having crossed paths many times on the Bristol scene, the four mercenaries (said mercenaries have performed with the likes of The Hoax, Marc Ford, Van Morrison, Bernie Marsden, Wille and Bandits, Innes Sibun and many others) that comprise KST finally decided to join forces in 2019 and indulge in their mutual love of blues and funk, delivering high-energy sets across the land. It’s a heavy soup of shimmy and shuffle. It’s the boom of a kick, it’s the shake of a hip. Like King Street, it’s cobbled together for a purpose, and like a blues turnaround, it takes the audience from what it was to what it is.”

Sam Kennedy Trio

Thursday 13th January 2022

at the Teign Corinthians Yacht  Club.

This event was sold out – tickets were here

We are delighted to continue our run at the yacht club which has a great acoustic, welcoming staff and great food and drink.

Sam Kennedy is one of the leading exponents of modern electric blues which encompasses the music of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, to name but two well-known artists: as well as giving an original twist to many classics.

Sam on guitar and vocals is backed by two superb artistes: on bass, Ian Jennings who has backed Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Van Morrison and many other stars. On drums, Lucy Piper, with blues in her blood, continues to forge her career as a superb drummer in  her own gender-free right and not requiring the label ‘female drummer’.

Sam played for us in a sell-out open air gig at the Commercial Inn last year during lockdown to rapturous applause and a standing ovation for a stunning  performance of vocals and pulse raising riffs.  We are now delighted  to host his return for what will be a stonking evening of superb electric Blues.
Book early so as not to be disappointed. Our club nights have consistently sold out this year weeks before the gig

Annika Skoogh sings Anita O’Day

Thursday 3rd February 2022

Doors from 6.30pm

Music from 7.30pm

at the Teign Corinthians Yacht  Club.

This event was sold out.

Annika Skoogh is Devon’s premier established jazz vocalist, hailing from Sweden via Exeter. We have had Annika back many times over the years as she always delights us with new and fresh material.

For this project, she brings a stellar band including the award winning Craig Milverton on piano, Steve Dow on guitar, Jim Rintoul on bass and Gary Evans on drums. They will be paying tribute to some of the classic arrangements of songs from the 50s and 60s, with special focus on Anita O’Day. Inspired by this most muscular, swinging vocalist’s acclaimed 1958 Newport Jazz Festival appearance , the band has painstakingly recreated arrangements of some of her classic recordings with Oscar Peterson’s quartet, improvising their own material of course. It should be a special and rare evening of the highest quality music.

Book early so as not to be disappointed. Our last dozen club nights have all consistently sold out before the gig

Tickets are available online here and from Regent Style Barbers in Teignmouth.

Diners need to pre-order from the resident Italian chef Paola from 6.30pm. Please take advantage to keep this feature of our nights going! Sample menu available here.

This high energy, groove-driven group got together to revive the classic jazz funk hits from its hey days in the 70s, 80s and 90s (although underground jazz funk gangs continue to operate today). While there are many heroes and sub-genres to cover, they have selected tunes by Herbie Hancock, George Benson, the Crusaders, Pat Metheny and Pee Wee Ellis. The Brecker Brothers are such giants (and Neil’s favourites) that they get two tunes including the iconic jazz-rock anthem, Some Skunkfunk.

You don’t often see groups devoted to this genre outside London, but there is clearly a demand – they packed out a raucous Saturday night performance at our 2019 festival and had queues tailing down into the street.

Featuring Neil Maya on saxes, Kev Sanders on bass, Jesse Molins on guitars, Gary Evans on drums and percussion, Tom Ball on keyboards and vocoder.

Becca Langsford & Vince Lee are well known on the South West blues scene. They have been performing together since 2008 in a variety of different projects. Early country blues, ragtime & roots music is the focus of their show.

Together they share vocal duties on a varied set of classic blues and self written tunes featuring Vince’s authentic guitar stylings and Becca’s driving washboard rhythms. The duo are influenced by the pioneers of early blues, Bessie Smith, Leadbelly, Memphis Minnie & Blind Boy Fuller to name a few.

Their old time, uptempo music is highly infectious!

Nigel Price Organ Quartet

Saturday 2nd October 2021 at 8pm

at Teign Corinthian Yacht Club.

This was an absolutely unforgettable gig. Even the band remarked on the incredible atmosphere and they clearly fed off it. Some of it was captured on video and is available here on our facebook page. Rest assured we have started a petition to get this fabulous band back. The original write-up is below.

“Nigel Price is probably the most dynamic and gifted guitarist on the British jazz scene today and this is the proof.”  All about Jazz

Ross Stanley

Ross Stanley

The Nigel Price Organ Trio / Quartet is a band that deserves a massive stage and we are lucky to have them in our small but perfectly formed venue, with funding form the Arts Council making the tour possible. Nigel, several times voted best jazz guitarist in the UK, brings a night of thrilling, high octane, blues-infused jazz  in partnership with Ross Stanley, said by many to be the Hammond organ player of choice in the jazz, blues and pop world. Ross has won the All Parliamentary Jazz award for best player in the “miscellenaeous instrument” category, but anyone who has heard his roaring, supersonic, virtuoso playing will know that description hardly does him justice.

Joel Barford (above) has been with Nigel for some time, recording on the latest CD. Joel is known for playing  with a variety of people such as Anthony Strong, Tom Seals, Chris Montague, Alex Garnett, Ant Law, Sam Leak, Alex Hitchcock, National Youth Jazz Orchestra, CC Smugglers, Greg Coulson, Dave Swift, Derek Nash, Dave O’Higgins, John Etheridge, Lucy Merrilyn, Alex Ridout, Pete Long, Liane Carroll and many more.  Joel has played venues and festivals such as Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express Jazz Club, Vortex Jazz Club, 606 Jazz Club, North Sea Jazz Festival, London Jazz Festival, Cambridge Jazz Festival and more across UK and Europe. https://www.joelbarford.com/

Just when you thought it could get no better, Tony Kofi on saxes completes the quartet for this date. Having started in Tomorrow’s Warriors and played with Jazz Jamaica, Gary Crosby’s NuTroop, Julian Joseph, Courtney Pine, Donald Byrd, Abdullah Ibrahim among many others, Tony has been leading his own quartet and other projects for many years, as his awards attest:

  • Winner of the BBC Jazz Awards 2005 -Album of the Year
  • Winner of the BBC Jazz Awards 2008 – Best Instrumentalist
  • Winner of the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2005 – Best Ensemble
  • Nominee, Mobo Awards 2008
  • Winner of the Jack Petchey Foundation Award 2015
  • Winner of the Black Achievers Cultural, Music and Arts Award 2016

Nicolas Meier World Group

Sunday 19th September 2021 at 3.30pm

at Teign Corinthian Yacht Club. (Doors at 3pm)

Just 20 tickets left: Tickets £12 available online here and from Regent Style, Teignmouth.

Nicolas Meier has headlined at several of our festivals and also featured in Gabrielle Ducomble’s band in the third and last in our current series of “Ladies sing” concerts at the Pavilions Theatre in June. This was yet another sell out gig and, while Gabrielle herself was sublime, the artistry of the musicians was also a highlight for many in the audience.

Born in Switzerland but based in the UK, guitarist Nicolas Meier has carved a reputation out as one of the world’s most original and uniquely talented guitarists. Drawing from a love of Turkish, Eastern & Middle Eastern music, Flamenco, Tango and more — all mixed with jazz — Meier’s versatility and musical fluency extends well beyond that, even. He has even toured the world twice with rock guitar legend, Jeff Beck.

Nicolas let us know he was touring the South West and the UK, so we had to have him back on his way through. He brings an unusual line-up of guitar, bass, violin and tablas (Indian percussion) playing jazz with world music influences. This is our first “matinee” performance and we believe some relaxed, world jazz vibes in the beautiful Yacht club setting (bar included) will make for the perfect Sunday afternoon.

Demi Garcia Sabat on percussion
Richard Jones on violin
Kevin Glasgow on bass
Nicolas Meier on fretted and fretless nylon string guitars and Glissentar

Reviews for his album LIVE (2020)

“Exciting from the first to the last second and with a Nicolas Meier World Group in top form. Highest recommendation!” 20/20

https://www.musikansich.de/review.php?id=21333

“Like so many artists, “live” is where it’s at for Meier. His buoyant stage presence, the range of colors he eases from his choir of guitars and related instruments, and the passion he has for his unique meld of Turkish, Balkan and jazz modes make his gigs a vibrant experience, a mezzo of the marvelous. And the band aren’t bad either.”

Andy Knight and Adam Sweet

at Teign Corinthian Yacht Club.

See a track from the evening here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuzB3lr0rHg

Local boy, Andy Knight, was persuaded that he had to live in London if he wanted to pursue his very promising career as a Blues guitarist and singer. So he did!
Yet he’s kept up his old contacts here in the Styx and has now palled up with another stalwart of the local Blues scene, and a favourite of our audiences, Adam Sweet. They got together with a master of the bass guitar, Ian Jennings, who has played with the likes of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Van (the man) Morrison, to name but a few. Darren Crome, who’s been playing since the age of 10, was on drums.

This was a stonking evening of a variety of blues styles, with both guitarists leading and singing separately, playing off each other and singing in harmony, provoking some rare dancing in the aisles from a delight crowd. The evening was topped off with the club’s new chef, Paola, who offers authentic Italian food like her ‘Nona’ made. Sample menu available here.

Matt Carter Trio

5th August 2021 at 8pm

Pianist Matt Carter was back by popular demand to start off our new chapter at Teign Corinthian Yacht Club and, despite short notice for our audience, we sold out tickets in advance. Originally based in Exeter and always popular with the region’s jazz audiences, Matt has just spent the last 4 years in London and graduated from the Royal Academy of Music this summer. He is already getting booked at well known London venues such as the 606 club and the Spice of Life in Soho, so we were lucky to catch him in Devon at this time.

With Tom Drewett on bass and Tim Carter on drums completing Matt’s group, and classic jazz club seating in a newly refurbished venue overlooking the sea, there was no better evening’s entertainment. Preview video of Matt at the 606 here.

This was the first in a series of joint ventures between  Pavilions Teignmouth and Teignmouth Jazz and Blues, initially featuring female artists. Playing to a nearly sold out auditorium, the band started to play a lovely slowish riff as the radiant figure of Kyla Brox approached the mic to start what turned out be a marvelous evening of wonderful music. This first number immediately displayed the beauty and power of her voice with several people commenting during the break how emotional they had felt from the beginning. She showed an incredible range in her voice and at least on two occasions seemed to hold a perfect note for what seemed like minutes! Much of the music was original compositions, a lot from their latest recording called Pain and Glory, though they did end the first set with their wonderful take on one of Kyla’s idols, Etta James and her version of “I’d rather go blind”Many commented on the excellent musical standard of the band who were in particularly good form though I was told that Paul Farr on lead Guitar was suffering from a nasty cold. The drummer, Mark Warburton however, whose playing throughout was fantastic, accused him of feigning a touch of man flu’! This only underlined how well the band seemed to gell and get on. They were certainly a tight outfit that night.

Kyla indeed was very generous in her praise of her fellow musicians who included her husband, Danny Blomeley on bass who in turn impressed the audience with a couple of fine solos.
Paul Farr on lead was outstanding, showing a versatility and range which was quite magnificent. The skill of the local sound man, Dominic Jeffries, deserves a special mention as the sound quality was spot on all night.
Finally they left possibly the best to last with their rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” which brought most of the audience to their feet to salute the mastery of this fine band. A very good evening was had by all.
